After a nationwide search, the 6th Street Playhouse has announced the hiring of Craig A. Miller of Houston, Texas as its new Artistic Director and Education Director.

"Craig's experience, expertise and passion were evident throughout the interview process," said 6th Street Playhouse Board President, Bill Morgan of Santa Rosa. "We are extremely excited about Craig's agreement to join us in Sonoma County."

Miller was the unanimous choice of the search committee, made up of local directors, artists and Playhouse board members. The 6th Street Playhouse Board of Directors unanimously ratified the committee's recommendation, Morgan said.

Miller spent the last seven years as Founder / Artistic Director of The Texas Repertory Theatre Company in Houston. Prior to Texas Rep, Miller was Founder / Artistic Director of the East Window Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois; and Founder / Artistic Director of Chillicothe Summer Theatre in Chillicothe, Illinois. He has also served as Producing Artistic Director of The Clinton Area Showboat Theatre in Clinton, Iowa and served as Artistic / Casting Associate for The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison, New Jersey.

Miller has numerous directing credits in Iowa, Illinois, New Jersey, South Carolina and Texas.  He holds a BS in Acting from Illinois State University; an MFA in Directing from the University of South Carolina; and for the past five years has served as an adjunct professor of Theatre at Lone Star College in Houston.

After serving as Interim Artistic Director and Education Director the last five months, Michael Fontaine of Forestville has been named the 6th Street Playhouse Managing Director.

"The 6th Street Playhouse is very fortunate to have a manager of Michael's caliber and wealth of experience to help guide us through the next period of our growth. We are thrilled to have him join us in this permanent position," said Morgan.

Fontaine has been involved in the theater arts in the Bay Area for the last 30 years. His administration experience includes serving as Executive Director for the Petaluma Arts Center; Director of Education for the Santa Rosa Symphony; General Manager at Cinnabar Theater in Petaluma; and Administrative Director for Face to Face/Sonoma County AIDS Network. He has also served as a theater department faculty member at Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University. He holds a BA in acting; an MFA in Directing; and Ed.D. in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco.

Fontaine replaces Cheryl Itamura of Sonoma, who served as Managing Director for three years. Itamura has taken the new position as Director of Business Administration at the Harmony Festival, based in Rohnert Park.

"Cheryl has been a wonderful asset to the 6th Street Playhouse through a period of many changes and she will be missed," said Morgan.
