THE LION KING North American Tour Breaks Another Record at Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco

For the third time in its engagement, the North American tour of Disney's THE LION KING broke the SHN Orpheum Theatre box office record for the highest grossing week of a Broadway engagement. The award-winning musical grossed $2,101,332.00 for nine performances the week ending January 6, playing to 100% capacity. The touring production of THE LION KING recently set two SHN Orpheum Theatre records when it grossed $2,100,980.00 for nine performances the week ending December 30, 2012 and $1,674,059 for eight performances the week ending November 25, 2012. Prior to this engagement, the SHN Orpheum Theatre house record had not been broken since January 30, 2010.

By the time the smash 11-week San Francisco return engagement of THE LION KING concludes on Sunday, January 13, 2013, it will have entertained over 180,000 people and grossed more than $16 million at the box office.

It is estimated that by the conclusion of the San Francisco engagement, THE LION KING will generate a $56 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a Touring Broadway League report which found that, on average, Broadway tours contribute an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales to the local metropolitan area's economy.

"After 10 triumphant years of touring THE LION KING, it was thrilling for the entire cast and crew to finally return to the Bay Area for the first time since the production's incredible 43-week premiere run in 2004," said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions. "We are overwhelmed by the enduring response to the show and thank the city of San Francisco for another fantastic engagement."

The North American touring production of THE LION KING has been seen by more than 14 million theatergoers and grossed over $928 million to date. After 10 years on the road, THE LION KING continues to celebrate unparalleled achievements and delight new audiences throughout North America. The current schedule is listed below.
