Who would guess that what has been described as a sleepy little cowtown is actually a hotbed of young musical talent? The latest to join Sacramento's rank of up-and-coming people-to-watch is Sam C. Jones, a transplant from Virginia who landed on the west coast in 2016 and has quickly made a name for himself in the world of local professional theatre. He has recently returned to his passion of songwriting and will be releasing an album of original work later this winter. CBS has ordered GAME ON!, a sports comedy entertainment series based on “A League of Their Own,” the BAFTA-winning U.K. series currently in its 14th season on Sky. The U.S. version will be hosted by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning actor, writer and producer Keegan-Michael Key, and will feature tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams and New England Patriots Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski as team captains. Actor and comedian Bobby Lee (“Mad TV,” “Tiger Belly”) and Emmy Award-winning writer Ian Karmel (THE LATE LATE SHOW with JAMES CORDEN) will serve as comedian panelists.

Ranked, A New Musical is backa??and it's better than ever. You might recall that the premiere of this show about buying grades eerily coincided with breaking news of the college admissions scandal. The story's creators, Kyle Holmes and David Taylor Gomes, wanted to highlight the enormous pressure that students today were under. They spoke to their drama students at Granite Bay High School and came up with Ranked, which quickly garnered critical acclaim from both local and national outlets.

The third annual Ground and Field Theatre Festival (GFTF), 'Play on the Brink,' spotlights new plays and musicals written by local, national and international playwrights and composers, including Broadway veterans Mindy Cooper and Matt Gumley. The main performances take place beginning Sept. 26 on the UC Davis campus and in community venues. All are free.

Jennifer Saunders will put her film knowledge to the ultimate test as she takes on the role of team captain in the second series of Sky original panel show, There's Something About Movies. She'll join fellow team captain Michael Sheen and host Alan Carr while comedian and friend of the show Tom Allen will be a regular member of Jennifer's team.

When David Taylor Gomes and Kyle Holmes set out to write an original musical for their students at Granite Bay High School, they never could have foreseen the impact their work would have on high schools across the nation. Students are reacting to having their voices heard, and the effect is monumental. People are clamoring to see and produce Ranked: A New Musical, which deals with the pressures that teenagers face today in maintaining grades, social status, and their fight to get into the college of their choice. Due to the popularity of Ranked, they decided to bring the original cast together for one more night to perform the show in concert style at The Crest Theatre. Broadway World Sacramento spoke to Holmes and Gomes about the making of Ranked and what we can expect in the future.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the winners of the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards, celebrating and rewarding the very best programmes and performances of 2018. The ceremony was hosted by Graham Norton at the Royal Festival Hall, London, and presenters included Andrew Scott, Billy Monger, Bradley & Barney Walsh, Danny Dyer, David Schwimmer, Julia Stiles, Kelsey Grammer and Sir Lenny Henry.

Composers Concordance presents its 8th Annual CompCord Festival. This year's festival theme is 'Animals'. Five concerts, each with compositions focusing on unique musical stories about the animal kingdom, will include multiple world premieres.

Ranked highlights the pressures that students today face to succeed.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has today announced the nominations for the 2019 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards and British Academy Television Craft Awards. These awards reward the very best in television craft and television programmes broadcast in the UK in 2018. The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 12 May with the British Academy Television Craft Awards taking place two weeks earlier on Sunday 28 April at The Brewery, London.
